Special Inspections Requirements of the Michigan Building code 2009

Speaker Scott Cope - the city of Rochester Hills Building Department Director

The Special Inspection requirements of the Michigan Building Code - 2009 (MBC-09) are very detailed and can be a challenge to work with. The City of Rochester Hills Building Department has developed a Special Inspection Program (SIP), which consists of SIP Guide, Special Inspection & Testing Agreement, and Statement of Special Inspections (SSI), to assist all parties involved in the process to understand the requirements and provide an efficient process to satisfy Building Code requirements without causing any delays during plan review and construction. The requirements of Sections 1704 and 1705 of the MBC-09 will be covered.

This program will be geared toward defining your role (as Structural Design Engineer and/or as Special Inspection Firm) in the processes, during the preparation of the SSI and/or during construction.

This program is registered with the State of Michigan for ACT 54 requirements.

      Voided Slab Systems

“Voided Slab” systems including new, more efficient methods using recycled forming materials. This presentation provides an overview of long-span flat plate voided slab systems that are based on the concept of introducing voids into the slab. This concept has been used for over 100 years (pan joists, waffle slabs, hollow-core, etc.) and this presentation discusses an improvement on this technology. The concept relies on inserting spherical voids in the flat plate made of recycled plastic that are “housed” in the middle third of the slab inside positioning wire cages. The use of these voids result in a dead load reduction by as much as 35%; allowing for clear economical spans in the 50 feet range with the same economical formwork used in traditional flat plate construction. This presentation discusses aspects related to constructability, design issues (shear, flexure and vibrations) as well as several case studies where this “emerging” floor system has been used in the construction of office buildings, hospitals and entertainment centers.

Concrete Specifications – What are you really asking for?

Concrete specifications may be simple and straight forward, water-to-cement ratio, percent fine aggregate, compressive strength and we’re done.  What do you really get in these specifications versus what the producer can make?  What kind of back up data do you require to accept a mix design?  New technology is taking concrete where it has never gone before!  We will explore these questions and statements attempting to clarify the truths.

      DETAILS OF SESSIONS

Building a Ship in a Bottle - Accident Fund Company

Speaker: Larry Kruth, P.E. - Douglas Steel Company, Jeff Gasparott, P.E. - Ruby + Associates

Description: How do you take a 1930s-era abandoned power-generating station listed on the National Register of Historic Places and convert it into a national headquarters for a major insurance company, while still preserving the original architecture? First, you need to contract with a steel fabricator and erector to be involved early enough to help guide the design! This session will delineate how early involvement, as well as the fabricator's, erector's and their consultants' expertise guided the new construction which has been compared to "building a ship in a bottle." The session will highlight the techniques used, such as BIM and "surgical demolition," to help to maintain the visual appearance of the exterior of the building and achieve the intended LEED requirements and sustainability goals without compromising stability.

Masonry Structural Design Methods and Tools

Speaker: Scott W. Walkowicz, P.E., NCEES - Walkowicz Consulting Engineers

Description: This presentation will consider analytical methods used to calculate masonry capacity in response to gravity and lateral load demand. The discussion will begin with hand methods for both load determination and masonry design and will continue through component and multi-dimensional computer analysis. Software utilized will be Structural Masonry Design System and Ram Elements including the Masonry Wall Module. The information will be developed for a complete building and will address key aspects for total building masonry design while focusing on the benefits of modern finite element software when designing masonry structures or elements. Important masonry design and detailing recommendations will also be addressed. A brief update on changes in the 2008 MSJC, the masonry code referenced in the recently adopted 2009 MBC, and changes in the soon to be published 2011 MSJC will be discussed as time permits.

AISC TR Higgins Lecture - Changes in the 2010 Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings

Speaker: James O. Malley, S.E. - Degenkolb Associates

Description: This session will describe the major changes to the 2010 Seismic Provisions, which are expected to be available in the second quarter of 2011. These changes include re-structuring of the Provisions to a chapter layout more similar to the Specification, a more unified presentation of the requirements of each seismic force resisting system, a clearer discussion of the intended seismic response characteristics for each system, the addition of cantilever column systems, and greatly expanded sections on composite systems.
