Structural floor vibrations can affect the performance of buildings in many ways depending upon the use of the space and the magnitude of the vibrations. Excessive vibration can disrupt the function of sensitive equipment and affect human comfort. On elevated floors and pedestrian bridges, human activity is often the dominant source of vibration. Since addressing these issues in design, rather than mitigating after they have been noticed as a problem, is much easier and cost effective, it is important to recognize when they might arise.

This presentation will help attendees to develop an awareness of the dynamic properties affecting floor vibration as well as understand how floor vibrations can affect different types of occupancies and spaces. It will also explore how human-induced floor vibrations are predicted and how human-induced floor vibrations are mitigated.
